Here's the process that I used to fill out my taxes in about an hour and a half to two hours.
1. Keep good records of all your tax documents (e.g. a file)
2. Get the 1040.
3. Follow instructions line-by-line.
4. Finish
It's not rocket science.

It's not rocket science, but those books could be made a lot more clearly...turn to pg 33, now turn to pg 64, op! back to pg 21, etc.
