Pick #120

Charles Theodore Zerner - "You Were Right (The First Time)" from A Suitcase Life

how appropriate that it popped up on my Pandora on Tuesday.

Air Bubbles

Although my dive computer wasn't working, I think this was taken from about 50-60 feet down. It looks cool if you stretch it to fit a widescreen monitor.

Pub Run

I just got back from a pub run. We started at this kid Micah's house with 2 beers. Then, me, Long, Tommy, Doug, Long, & Jen went to: Po'boys, Rita's (free italian ice!), AJ's, Proof, Ken's, Pot Bellies, the Palace, and back to Micah's place. I played beer pong and funneled a couple beers back there. The pub run was pretty sweet. I only paid about $10 the whole night.

Business Reply Mail

Don't you hate getting junk mail? One thing I've started doing is sending back the business reply mail envelopes empty. The company has to pay for the envelope to be mailed and they might get the picture if they start to get a bunch of empty envelopes back in the mail.

If I wanted insurance, I'd seek you out! Quit sending me stuff! Say it by sending them back some empty envelopes.

Clogged Drain

Sarah got me a cool "cheat sheet" called "STAIN REMOVAL Tips for Household Cleanup" which has some cool stuff in it. I just tried its tip for a clogged drain. It says
Pour .5 cup salt and/or .5 cup baking soda down drain, followed by boiling water, flush with hot tap water.

It worked pretty well. I guess this doesn't work if you have standing water in the sink already. After the first time I tried this, the sink was still draining kind of slowly so I did it again and the sink drains well.

HC Alumni: Annual Fund

I went to campus on Friday and both Dean Buller & Dianne Reeves told me that the contribution rate for the HC annual fund is 3%. I think they said that the average is around 15% for all colleges. Why is everybody slacking? All you have to do is send in ONE DOLLAR for you to be counted in the contribution statistics. I know that I'd like to see my school grow as it is building its legacy. A big factor in donors deciding on contribution levels is the percentage of alumni who donate. If you haven't yet contributed, DO IT NOW.

Here's what you should do:
Make a check payable to the Honors College Annual Fund.
Mail to: HC Annual Fund

Cruise 2009

I'm going on a cruise again. Hopefully it will be better than last time (how could it not be?) and I'll enjoy cruising. Anyway, I'll be gone from Monday through Friday. Hopefully I'll get some nice pictures and stories along the way.

Mike Rowe

If you don't already know, Mike Rowe is the star of the Discovery Channel's show Dirty Jobs. Mike Rowe is a badass. He just jumps in to all those dirty jobs. He doesn't care if stuff smells bad or makes you sore the next day. It seems like he's the antithesis of the common complainer who seems so common this day in age. I think he shows us an important aspect of the economy we live in. There have to be people who do the jobs that most of the rest of us don't want. It makes me sick to hear people bitching about their air conditioned job where they have to basically show up and fill space while performing menial tasks...unless they're working 16 hour shifts.

I used to work 10-12 hour days with plenty of that time spent in attics crawling through itchy insulation. I thought it was great (well, most of the time). Then I'd hear someone else bitching about a long day in retail where they were "on their feet" all day...oh, and "all day" means "about 8 or 9 hours." I'm not trying to say that I'm a badass, just that they're bitchy whining complainers who would be embarrassed to be in the presence of Mike Rowe. I don't know if I could do all those jobs that he's tried, but I think that I could submit myself to a day of the vast majority of them. I think many people couldn't. It's too bad that people can just suck it up and do what's got to be done.

Pandora Gifts

You can "make a station for a friend" aka "gift a station" on Pandora. Just look down at the bottom of their material and there will be 4 boxes. Click and follow the instructions. It's easy. You can even send the station to yourself if you think you'll like it too. It's a cool, fast, easy, cheap (free) way to give somebody a present they can use over and over again.

Another cool feature is the concert finder. I haven't actually used it with any success (and it failed to pick up on Sarah Mac Band shows), but it looks neat. It's down there on the bottom too. You just click the button and it searches through the artists who populate your stations and it finds out if they're having any concerts near you (recall that you gave Pandora your zip code when you signed up).

Read Your Bible

I think many of us have had the idea that we'd read the Bible cover to cover one day. I was making good progress on it for a while, one book at a time. I'd skip around and read some shorter ones so that I could cross the names off the list of books I still had left to read. In recent months, I've been slacking on this project. Anyway, I came across this article on Slate and thought it was really good. If you've been thinking about cracking the Good Book, peruse that article at your leisure and see if it doesn't put a spark to your propane.

Make Your Own Font

www.yourfonts.com has a cool tool to generate a font based on what you write down on a piece of paper. I recently became interested a little more in fonts after watching the movie Helvetica. Making your own font requires some specialized software and some patience if you don't want to do it through a website. The yourfonts is free and pretty fast & simple. I made one that is my handwriting. I'm not super happy with it...I need to retry while being more careful about how high up on the block I start/finish my letters (that will make sense if you try to do this yourself).
